About Department

Department of Shalya Tantra or Department of Surgery is one of the clinical departments that teaches and trains the students of 4th year B.A.M.S. new course. In this department the students learn about the basics of surgery and para-surgical aspects given in Ayurveda as well as in current system of medicine.

Shalyatantra is one of the distinct branches of Ashtang Ayurveda. Now a day's world is turning to Ayurved for comprehensive treatment of diseases. Surgical knowledge and treatments of disease described in Shalyatantra can be researched and used in diseases with minimum complications and side effects.

The parallel running hospital along with the Ayurvedic medical college provides the basic surgical and all the life saving facility to the local area and the surrounding rural areas as well.

Significant surgeries like herniorraphy, herniotomy, hernioplasty, appendectomy, hydrocele, torsion of testis, varicocele etc

The students are taught the strict discipline and management of operation theatre and trained through demonstration and carefully handling of human parts during operation.

Teaching and training of general surgery as well of anorectal surgeries constitutes the surgical discipline.

Ksharasutra (caustic cauterizes), Agnikarma (thermo cautery), Rakta Mokshan (bloodletting) are the outstanding parasurgical techniques practiced. The knowledge of ancient principles of longevity of Ayurveda in regard to surgical and parasurgical concept of diseases, their treatment and betterment of patients is also taught during the course.

Our department of surgery is up to the mark to fulfill the teaching and training requirement for our student of final year of BAMS. We have sufficient resources to complete the knowledge of our students. The surgical unit is fully equipped and is in excellent clinical working condition. The operation theatres and wards are fully hygienic to manage all types of emergencies round the clock.

In this department student learns about:

  1. The surgical aspect of the body both anatomically and pathophysiologically is taught. Significant surgeries like herniorraphy, herniotomy, hernioplasty, appendectomy, hydrocele, torsion of testis, varicocele and anorectal surgeries.
  2. Kshara Karma - like Kshara, Kshara Varti etc. and applications. Moreover method of preparation, Standardization and applications
  3. Agni Karma - Introduction, types and applications.
  4. Raktamokshana - Introduction, types and applications.
  5. Yantra and Shastra - Ancient and recent.
  6. Concept of Trividha Karma - Purva, Pradhan and Pashchat.
  7. Ashtavidha Shastra Karmas
  8. Basic knowledge of Sanghyaaharan - Anaesthesia, types, methods etc

Objectives:

  1. To create a Shalya Chikitsaka with heart of Ayurveda and hands of Surgeon.
  2. Have the basic knowledge and surgical principles described in Shalya Tantra by various Acharyas.
  3. They will be able to diagnose and operate common surgical diseases according to Ayurveda and Modern medicine.
  4. We have well equipped departmental library which contains:
  1. Numerous Ayurvedic and allopathic surgical textbooks, reference books, Mannequins dummies for basic trauma life support course and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  2. Museum which contains specimens of diseased organs.
  3. Yogya, sangyaharan models and charts

Departmental Activities:

  1. Allopathic surgeons in laparoscopy, endoscopy and colonoscopy are invited for special lectures and demonstrations.
